Do you row on the water?
Re: Do you row on the water?
i do, but i get a bit annoyed with how few metres i do for the amount of time invested. however, i never really approach the water with the sense of dread that the erg can sometimes hold for me. and on a calm, sunny day it's the best thing in the world.
hopefully this morning i'll be in a double - that's my favourite boat; more stable than a single and much less fannying around than a quad or eight.

Fewer, it's bloody fewer.
I've rowed on the water 3 or less times
You've triggered a pet peeve. The rule is simple less of one, fewer of many.
Re: Do you row on the water?
I hope to try it regularly someday, but have only tried it three widely separated times so far. Maybe in retirement, if I ever get there.

Re: Do you row on the water?
I got a taste of it when I was at college in Kent .. Rochester, down on the Medway.. 6 or 7 times would probably be accurate. 1987.. hell.. that's a life time away now isn't it?
The opportunity has never been there since really. No where close enough now to be able to give it a try.

Re: Do you row on the water?
my daughter coxed bradford rowing club a couple of years ago at the HORR. they were really nice, wrote her a letter of thanks afterwards (which was almost like a glowing reference); not many people take that sort of trouble these days (oh god, now i sound like an old person... ). anyway, i'm sure they'd be very welcoming.

Re: Do you row on the water?
I live right next to a rowing club and went for a couple of sessions when I moved here. Most of the people were pretty unfriendly. The system for training beginners was totally non-existent and relied on the good will of members, which was somewhat lacking. I stopped going after my second time.

Re: Do you row on the water?
that's a shame - mind you, women's crews.... girls can be a bit bitchy (in case you hadn't noticed) and also get a bit insecure if they think anyone new might be better than them. i row with the recreationals (it's the only crew that fits in with my work pattern); we're very much the lowest of the low - our table at the annual dinner dance was practically in the car park - but i just get on with my training and ignore all that. the rest of the club have noticed we've got some pretty decent scullers now.
i decided to give rowing a go for 20 outings and not give up before that. i was hooked before 20 outings were done

Hey Jane,
Yeh, Ive noticed that one...on a few occassions
I also noticed there seems to be a lot of elitism and arrogance with people who row on the water and in-door rowers. An experience with a chap just last week really highlighted the attitudes of some people. Thankfully not everyone is like that, but it never ceases to surprise me when people involved in sports are supposed to have such positive attitudes.
You sound wise in ignoring it all though, thats certainly the best way to deal it I believe.

Re: Do you row on the water?
Rowing clubs often are too focussed on their racing teams, and take little notice of recreational rowers.
There are not many clubs in Spain who care about recreational rowing.
And it's true that many rowers do think they are better than ergers...
