weedy's week
woke up to a glorious sunrise
holiday coffee (frothy milk - makes me feel happy) for b/fast
grocery shopping at coccinelle (no mozzarella )
lunch - paté, cheese, homemade bread, white wine
afternoon - gardening in fabulous sunshine - lots of pruning, weeding and rat poisoning. dominic and tanzy played badminton.
fabulous sunset.
supper - goat's cheese tart, CHIPS , salad, then cheese, pudding = choc, and fig rolls
after supper - painted one wall of bathroom (didn't like the colour i painted it at xmas - it's now turquoise and i love it!)
that's all.
tanzy had a brilliant meal on the ferry yesterday - it was all cooked in a le parfait preserving jar - salmon, veg and cream etc. looked stunning so i'm going to try that sometime.

Re: weedy's week
It's been a lovely weekend this side of the channel; sounds idyllic over there.
What's happened to your vibrant colour-scheme while you've been away
It's become very grey; you can't please everyone so you'd better please yourself
Regards,
Joe

MONDAY
another beautiful day. haven't seen a cloud yet. stayed at home. did gardening all day. got LOADS done. two raised beds completely weed free and lots of raspberries moved about. celeriac thinned out. sadly we're going to miss all the purple sprouting broccoli which is JUST appearing . can't believe i actually got a bit sunburnt today. i did think about suncream this morning, but it seemed a bit silly in mid-feb. we sat out on the patio for aperitifs at lunchtime . the fish were loving it - jumping around.
lunch - just paté, cheese, plus smoked trout with fresh dill and lemon oil . supper was a british/french fusion - boeuf bourguignon (which i bottled at christmas) with added dumplings and petits pois, then cheese (roquefort). i have to say that i did a superb job of preserving the beef and i'm going to use this method a lot more from now on. then we played the britain game and rummikub! i lost both .
now it's time for a bath (i'll probably give the bathroom a quick clean first). haven't had time to row, but i'm knackered and aching from gardening. think i've had enough exercise for the day.

Hah! your days in France can not possibly compare with the 3 days I've had working in Sunny Swindon
... in fact, lucky for you they don't have any comparison.

The descriptions of your lunch and dinner are making me hungry.
Sounds like spring has already begun in France.

Re: weedy's week
didn't sleep well last night. daffs have opened today . morning - bank, sort out insurance, post stuff, shopping in brecey. lunch - left overs from last night. sat out in a deck chair for a while. another day of clear blue skies and gardening; strawberries moved to a new home and the moles have provided nice soil to plant broad beans etc (job for tomorrow). english friends popped round at aperitif time so didn't get everything finished - it can wait. supper - homemade sushi - tanzy directing, i was was sous-chef. played great game of britain again - i won - huzzah .
tomorrow is our last day. feel a bit reluctant to go back to uk, but it's been a fabulous break, even though we work quite hard when we're here. i guess it's the sun that makes the difference .

Re: weedy's week
been suffering with a little bit of brainache and sicky feeling since last night. went to the boathouse to try and clear it by getting out on the water (in a quad) in the sunshine. it didn't work and i still feel crap. also did 30mins w/up, VERY gentle (2:28.0, av.hr 144, max 154). the quad was rubbish (newbie at bow), rocking all over the place and i didn't much care for macons instead of cleavers. but, given how shitty i was feeling, my erg was ok at marathon pace.
extra rehearsal with the band today as they have a competition on thursday.
then, at 2.30, a music dept meeting with the head and bursar to be told that the music dept has to make the equivalent of 1 full-timer redundant. a double blow as dominic and i are both in the dept. bugger . i think i know how to keep my job secure at full time, which is important as i'm the one that gets the free house and all associated perks. dominic is also partly in ICT so maybe more work will turn up there. we've got about 2 weeks to fight it out amongst ourselves in the dept.
feeling really grim actually. think we'll have stew and dumplings for dinner!
EDIT
forgot to say that dominic and i managed to set off the whole school fire alarm at lunchtime by burning toast . oops! 800+ people standing out in the cold just because i was hungry.

Re: weedy's week
Hope you're feeling a bit better this evening. It's probably good that they had an unscheduled fire drill; management get very complacent and too many folk know when the practices are due.
Tightening of belts in the private sector? There mustbe a recession coming.

yes, it's all getting a bit grim - if pupil numbers fall then they need fewer teachers. in happier times the odd year can slip by with some folks having a light timetable. for 2008-9 we're probably 40 pupils down, so that's £400,000.
on the bright side, dominic just had a phone call from the head saying she's extending the deadline for head of ICT applications to wednesday, as she'd noticed he hadn't applied .
